return of retro

Not only did I finish this project, but I even planted something. That deserves a short of rum or something. Possibly cookies (which I did bake today — and even managed to bake them, but did have a bit too much raw cookie dough).

Apparently the plant (offspring of a plant I bought at the Farmers' Market) can't be killed. So no idea how that will factor in testing the records as viable pots for other plants, but as other people have done this, I'm quite sure it's fine. The other record is in the bathroom with my growing collection of gardening nicknacks waiting for more offspring to spread.

What can I mangle next?

retro thursday

As plant fever continues, I reckoned that I'd be needing some new pots pretty soon. Being unemployed I thought it'd be time to explore alternative solutions to plant holding with a trip to Value Village. Plus, it's getting close to Hallowe'en and a trip there is never amiss for ideas. Though I might go a slightly cheap route and just reuse another old costume like last year. It's a new city so they've never seen it and well, might as well get a couple uses out of them.

Back to the plants…

There wasn't much at Value Village. But I did pick up these two lovely items and I figure with some careful melting in the oven I should have two new plant containers for $4! Which, considering they're LP's, is a bit of a ripoff, but, well, that's what you pay for nostalgia.

PS – Wait, did I even like Cabbage Patch Kids as a kid? Is this real nostalgia, or just commercial nostalgia?

progress!

Last Sunday John and I finally managed to find some time to work on the bookcase. It's taken us since June. And while this almost became another one of those projects that fell off to the side that I mentioned before, it's still alive and kicking. And if not kicking, at least swaying it's foot back and forth in a kick-like motion.

As a result of Sunday, we discovered, after much nailing of odd-shaped pieces, that some of the more difficult components needed to be redone. Part of the problem is trying to cut 13 inch pieces accurately on a 12 inch table saw. It ended up being quite the contraption. So, out of five pieces, I took home three. Out of three pieces, I found time to sand and varnish two of them (the third needs to be braced or it may not survive the sanding process).

I'm not really sure what to put in the tall one yet. 46 inch books aren't very common. Perhaps a tall plant would work.

For those that aren't in the know, this cleverly disguised cow produces the best ice cream.
